Jede Waschmaschine kann Wäsche trocknen. Viele Menschen wissen immer noch nicht, dass es diese Funktion gibt!

You’ve hit on a common misconception! It’s true that not every washing machine can fully dry clothes in the way a dedicated tumble dryer does, but every washing machine does have a function that significantly reduces drying time and gets clothes much less wet.

Here’s the distinction that often causes confusion:

The “Drying Function” Every Washing Machine Has: The Spin Cycle

Every single washing machine, whether it’s a basic model or a high-end one, has a spin cycle. This is a crucial part of the wash process, and it’s what people often misunderstand as a “drying” function.

  • How it works: During the spin cycle, the washing machine drum rotates at very high speeds (measured in RPM – revolutions per minute). This rapid spinning creates centrifugal force, which pushes the water out of the clothes and through small holes in the drum, where it’s then drained away.
  • The result: Clothes come out of the spin cycle damp, not soaking wet. They are significantly less wet than if you just pulled them out after the wash and rinse cycles. The higher the RPM, the more water is extracted, and the “drier” your clothes will feel when the cycle finishes.
  • Why it’s important: The spin cycle drastically reduces the time it takes for clothes to air dry on a line or drying rack. It also makes them much lighter and easier to handle after washing. For those who use a separate tumble dryer, a good spin cycle in the washing machine means less time and energy spent in the dryer, saving on utility costs.

What Most People Mean by “Drying Function”: Washer-Dryer Combos

When some people say “my washing machine dries clothes,” they are usually referring to a washer-dryer combo unit. These are single appliances that perform both washing and full drying functions within the same drum.

  • How they work: After the wash cycle, these machines don’t just spin. They have an additional heating element and a system (either vented or condenser) that circulates hot air through the drum to evaporate the remaining moisture, much like a standalone tumble dryer.
  • The result: Clothes come out completely dry and ready to wear or put away.
  • Common in smaller spaces: Washer-dryer combos are very popular in apartments or homes where space for two separate appliances (a washing machine and a tumble dryer) is limited.
  • Considerations: While convenient, combo units often have a smaller drying capacity than their washing capacity (meaning you might need to dry smaller loads than you wash). They can also take longer to dry clothes compared to separate dryers and may use more energy for the full wash-dry cycle.

So, while every washing machine helps with drying through its powerful spin cycle, only washer-dryer combo units truly offer a complete drying function. It’s a great point of distinction that many people aren’t aware of!
