Homemade Chest Rub for Respiratory Ailments
This salve is based on natural, warming, and decongestant ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 100 ml carrier oil: (e.g., almond oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil) – this is the base of the salve.
- 20-25 g beeswax: (as pastilles or grated) – for the consistency of the salve. The more beeswax, the firmer the salve.
- 10-15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil: Decongestant, respiratory expander.
- 10-15 drops Peppermint essential oil: Cooling, pain-relieving, helps with stuffy nose.
- 5-10 drops Tea Tree essential oil: Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory.
- 5-10 drops Lavender essential oil: Calming, can help with coughing. (Optional)
- 5-10 drops Pine needle essential oil: Decongestant, good for the respiratory tract. (Optional)
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Heat-resistant glass or container (e.g., mason jar)
- Small pot (for the double boiler)
- Stirring spoon or glass rod
- Sterile jars or small tins with lids for storage
- Funnel (optional, for pouring)
Instructions:
- Prepare the double boiler: Place the heat-resistant glass or container in a pot. Fill the pot with water so it surrounds the glass halfway. Heat the water slowly over medium heat.
- Melt the beeswax: Add the carrier oil and beeswax to the glass in the double boiler. Let the beeswax melt slowly and completely. Stir occasionally.
- Cool down: Remove the glass from the double boiler. Let the mixture cool for a few minutes. It’s important that the mixture is no longer boiling hot, but still liquid enough before adding the essential oils. Too much heat can reduce the effectiveness of the essential oils.
- Add essential oils: Once the mixture has cooled slightly but is still liquid, add the essential oils. Start with the lower quantity and adjust to your preference if needed. Stir everything well to distribute the oils evenly.
- Pour: Carefully pour the still liquid salve into the prepared, sterile jars or tins.
- Harden: Let the salve completely cool and solidify at room temperature. This can take a few hours.
- Store: Close the tins tightly. The salve will keep for several months in a cool, dark place.
How to Use the Salve:
- For colds and coughs: Apply a small amount of the salve to the chest and back and gently massage it in. The warmth and the vapors from the essential oils can help clear the airways and relieve coughing.
- Before bedtime: Applying it before bedtime is especially soothing to promote freer breathing during the night.
- Not for children under 2 years old: Essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint are not suitable for young children. For older children, the amount of essential oils should be reduced. Always consult a pediatrician if in doubt.
- Avoid mucous membranes: Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
This homemade salve can be a wonderful addition to improve well-being during respiratory illnesses.
